WED: Today we will begin coverage of UNIT 5: HOW DO WE OVERCOME OBSTACLES IN OUR LIFE?
FIRST, we will view a clip from WNEP on a young girl, "Sara", from our area, who was recently awarded the National Handwriting Contest (she was born without hands) as an introduction to the story from our text of Aimee Mullins' "A Work In Progress" (PERSONAL NARRATIVE) on page 493. 
We will cover it together in our READING CIRCLE, but students will need to finish reading it on their own  for homework and answer questions #1-5 on the COMPREHENSION CHECK on page 499. 
THURS: review and discussion of questions from story yesterday, continue with group work using questions on page 500: ANALYZING TEXT

MON: "Mindful Mistakes" list...students will review their TDAs from all SAMPLERS and ESSENTIAL QUESTION UNIT PROMPTS from their classroom folders and make a list of common errors made on all TDA work from the year. Students will return to this list/samples on FRIDAY as end of our PSSA review time.
TUES: 1st 1/2 of class: time to finish previously assigned compare and contrast work on "Sarah" and "Hector" prompt from Friday's class. 
2nd 1/2 of class: class discussion/share alouds from written response.
WED: EMBEDDED ERRORS work with a partner, PUNCTUATION BRUSH UP work.

TUES: Argumentative essay activity: students will be in groups--each pulling from a hat a topic and then as a group will need to make a T chart of 3 reasons FOR/AGAINST it. Once groups finish, we will share aloud in class "round robin" discussion. This activity will demonstrate the necessity for not only critical thinking skills, and the CLAIM STATEMENT, but also their need to become familiar with the COUNTERCLAIM STATEMENT...2 essential elements of argumentative writing we will be progressing with this week....

Students will brainstorm ideas from the selections together then receive their own graphic organizers on which to begin synthesizing their own response to the prompt.

We will continue with discussion of previous TYPE 1s RE: THANKSGIVING holiday, and then segway into a sample 10% summary article review on the HISTORY OF WHY WE EAT TURKEY FOR THANKSGIVING together, with a follow up article on THE HISTORY OF WRITING, which will be a 10% SUMMARY quiz grade due at tomorrow's end of class!

WED: students will receive another hand out of an article entitled, "The History of Christmas",  (from the BBC.com), with my notes on it,

(as they previously received last week for our Thanksgiving-themed 10%summary), and we will use this to

discuss and review the 10% summary technique. Afterwards, we will continue with another 10%summary on "Christmas Trees", (from History.com) 

Students will be able to work on a 10%summary on this article in class today and tomorrow, and will need to have it completed for FRIDAY's class.
